Rotary Club of Tacoma North
January 2021
Hello fellow Rotarians!

Happy January!  With the holidays behind us, it is time to focus on all that a new year brings.

Things top of mind for me are creativity, positivity, and personal growth - more time for music, art, puzzles, good books, nature walks and time to focus on me.

My hope for you is 2021 is a year of fun - explore what matters most to you and enjoy the journey!

Yours in Rotary,
Bill Peters

Please join me in congratulating these Rotarians for their generosity to the causes of worldwide health, education and economic development through their contributions to the Foundation.

Rotary Club of Tacoma North is in process of developing a robust Youth Protection Program Policy to supplement our efforts in this essential area.  A draft of this Policy has been sent to the TNR Board for review and editing before we adopt the Policy and make it available to the full Club for review.

We are encouraging all Club members to take the online "Protecting Youth Program Participation" course that is available in the Learning Center at MyRotary.org.  I've had discussions with Al Ratcliffe, our Youth Protection Officer (YPO), as well as our District YPO Becky Fontaine, both of whom recommend the course as an excellent primer on the subject that compliments in person annual training from the YPO.  I just took the course again and I can tell you that it is relatively short (about 30 minutes) and in my opinion has excellent content and guidance relative to Rotary as well as other aspects of personal and professional life.

While it is our objective to ask all prospective members to take the online course the Board, Al and I would also love to see 100% participation from existing members.  More to come on this subject when we chat at our upcoming Club Assembly Meeting.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards coming up in March.  The RYLA Northwest Committee of Districts 5020 and 5030 (Western Washington and Vancouver Island, BC) have joined Camp ROYAL (District 5230) (Central California) to present a virtual conference in March 2021 for high school juniors and seniors, RYLA Ascend. On this website, you will find information about the RYLA Ascend program, as well as RYLA Northwest.   http://rylanw.org/ascend/

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where student leaders develop their leadership and teambuilding skills while having fun and making connections. Although RYLA conferences are typically held in-person, RYLA Ascend is a digital program, occurring in March 2021 around students’ school schedules.

Tacoma North is paying for Jolin Tito, a local high school student and part of the Palmer Scholar program, to attend the RYLA Conference.  Due to low enrollment, we have the opportunity to enroll additional students if we know other students who are interested – do you have connections with other student groups you think we should invite?  If so, please reach out to Vicky at vickytetzlaff@gmail.com.
